Novell NetWare as a syslog Client

Novell NetWare does not come with build-in syslog client functionality. However, with some external help Novell log files can be forwarded via syslog. This is the initial document on how this can be done. It is relatively brief. We hope to have updates soon.

The key point to know is that Novell NetWare stores log information in plain text file like sys$log.err, vol$log.err and tts$log.err. These files are accessible from any system that can connect to the NetWare file server.

So we can use MonitorWare Agent's file monitor to read this log files. To do this, you just need to follow these steps:

• Setup a Windows Server or Workstation and install MonitorWare Agent on it (or use one that is already running MonitorWare Agent).
• Make sure it can access the Novell NetWare file system (this means has a NetWare client installed). Pay attention to the system requirements to allow a Windows service to use UNC names on Novell NetWare.
• Configure MonitorWare Agent to use file monitor processes on the Novell NetWare files.
• Configure a MonitorWare Agent rule to forward the read messages via syslog.

This is all that needs to be done. As soon as the Agent starts, it begins forwarding the existing file lines. After the initial forwarding, only new lines are forwarded.

Syslog messages generated by these products can be received by MonitorWare Agent and WinSyslog.
